The Split: Truth or Smooch

Despite the blanket they were wrapped in, Frisk awoke shivering. The first thing they noticed was the door to their room was open. The second thing they noticed? Chara wasn’t in their bed.

“Chara!?” Frisk bolted up, looking around. For the first time since the split, Frisk started to feel nervous about giving Chara their own body. Sure, huge strides were made these past few months, but Chara picked the most random times to act out their aggression. If only they could feel Chara’s thoughts and emotions, they would calm down a bit. But Frisk couldn’t feel Chara’s presence. The split saw to that.

It was surprising lonely in ways Frisk didn’t suspect.

Brushing those thoughts aside, Frisk got up and searched for Chara. Guided by instinct, they followed the freezing cold until the found the source. The front door was open and on the steps sat Chara looking out into the void. As Frisk went to talk to them, the floorboard they were standing on creaked.

“Who’s there!?” Chara demanded, their fists raised ready for a fight.

“Hey,” Frisk waved as they eyed Chara carefully. This must be what it had been like for Toriel and Sans during that ill-fated exorcism or Papyrus in the garden. Despite their angry demeanor, Frisk saw a frightened, vulnerable kid trying their best not to get hurt.

Frisk had felt it before when they were connected, but to actually see it in person was heartbreaking.

“Could you close the door? It’s getting cold. And can we turn on some lights?” Frisk asked.

Chara only nodded in response.

They worked together in silence, Frisk making a makeshift blanket fort with a conveniently shaped lamp as their light source while Chara made hot chocolate. Though neither of them admitted it, it was odd to do something so…childish together. After everything they’ve been through, it was a pleasant change in pace. They decided to keep it going with a friendly game of truth or dare.

“Truth or dare?” Frisk asked.

“Truth.” Chara said as they sipped on some hot chocolate.

Frisk smirked. This is what they were hoping for. It was time to get some answers out of Chara. “Why were you sneaking around earlier?”

Chara’s initial reaction was to tell Frisk to mind their own business, but held their tongue. Usually, Frisk wouldn’t have to ask these questions. It was odd for Frisk of all people not to know what was in their head. Plus, it was part of the game to tell them anyway.

“I couldn’t sleep.” Chara said.

“How come?” Frisk asked.

“This whole ‘split’ thing,” Chara said with a sigh, “it’s been stressing me out lately. It’s just a lot of pressure to be everyone’s friend. I’m not use to it.”

“I know,” Frisk said, looking down at their own glass of hot chocolate. “It’s okay if you feel that way. If it makes it any better, this will end in a few weeks.”

They were right of course. In a few weeks, their temporary body will fade away, forcing them to merge with Frisk once more. Neither of them was willing to mention the reality of the situation. They shared a soul. No matter how hard Alphys tried, no matter how many bodies she created, she couldn’t change that. They’re bound to be together forever.

Something about that made Chara blush.

“Truth or dare?” Chara asked, trying to change the subject.

“Dare.” Frisk said, enjoying their hot chocolate.

I might never get another chance…

“I dare you to smooch me.” Chara blurted out, their face even redder than before.

Frisk’s panicked look said everything they didn’t want to hear. Chara wasn’t the type to take rejection well, especially when that rejection came from their eternal soulmate.

It hurt more than anything they felt before.

“Ha! Kidding!” Chara said as they laughed nervously, trying to savage whatever dignity they had left.

With a concerned look on their face, Frisk gently grasped Chara’s arms and held them in place. They looked into Chara’s eyes, demanding Chara’s full attention.

“…are you okay?” Frisk said as they leaned closer to Chara.

“…yeah.” Chara said in a small voice, shaking as if they were cold again.

With a sly smile, Frisk rubbed the sides of Chara’s arms, calming them down a bit.

“Good, cause I wasn’t going to spare you from this kiss…” Frisk said, pressing their lips with Chara before they could respond.

Emotions in which Chara hadn’t felt in years flooded their senses. Happiness, pleasure, and a sense of fulfillment, all of which Chara felt in spades. A familiar tingling spread across their face. They couldn’t remember the last time it happen involuntarily like it was at the moment. It was only a matter of time before Fri—

“Chara.” Frisk said.

“m-hmm?” Chara said. They had a pretty good idea of what Frisk was going say.

“Dude, your face is full of flowers.” Frisk said. Chara could hear the smirk that accompanied it. Chara wasn’t about to let Frisk’s comment ruin the moment. Nothing would ruin this moment for them.

“Frisk? Chara?”

Crap. Nothing, except a certain mother goat.

“…Why are you two kissing at one in the morning?” Toriel asked, eyeing them carefully.

The two children quickly separated and began babbling their excuses.

“Mom! No! It’s not what you think!” Frisk practically shouted.

Chara nodded quickly. “Okay, so, I couldn’t sleep so I started walking around.”

“And then I woke up and found Chara by themselves so I wanted to keep them company.” Frisk added, sounding flustered. “We built a blanket fort and—“

“then we played truth or dare…and…yeah…” Chara finished, their blush in full force once more.

“I see. Is…there anything else I should know about this relationship?” Toriel asked.

Chara felt like they were going to die from the embarrassment alone. They were about to confess how they truly felt when Frisk smiled up at their Mom and waved their hands dismissively.

“Relax Mom! We are friends in a totally platonic way. Isn’t that right Chara?” Frisk looked over to Chara and was surprised to see a pained look on their face.

“Yeah…right.” Chara said quietly, their voice full of hurt. “I think…I’m going to go back to bed. I had enough games for one night.”

Frisk looked confused as Chara rose out of the blanket fort. “Chara? Did I say something wrong?”

The only response Frisk was giving was the slamming of their bedroom door followed by the faint clicking of the lock.

Fun fact,  “Good, cause I wasn’t going to spare you from this kiss…”  was going to be “Time to get Frisky” but felt like it was too much.

((blesssssss))

On the roof of Toriel-sensei’s school, Chara gazed out across the city’s skyline. Their green and yellow sailor fuku fluttered in the breeze of the cool autumn afternoon. During lunch, this is where they would go when they wanted to be alone. Suddenly, a vibrant red rose blocked their view.

“Good afternoon, Chara-san.” It was Frisk-senpai, sporting their dark blue gakuran. It was just like Frisk to avoid wearing the school’s official colors, the goofball. They often did silly things like this at school. How they managed to do this under Toriel-sensei’s nose escaped Chara.

“Good afternoon…Senpai.” Chara practically spat the last word. Frisk flinched.

“I know what you’re trying to do Senpai,” Chara said. “I heard all about you. How you flirt with anything that moves.”

Frisk smirked. “What can I say Chara-san? I like to get Frisky…” Frisk lifted their hands and wiggled their fingers in demonstration.

Chara scoffed in disgust. “You sound more like Sans-san every day! I expected better from someone raised by Toriel-sensei!” They spun around to leave, but Frisk grabbed Chara’s wrist.

Chara looked back, ready to tell them off when they froze. Frisk looked more serious than Chara has ever seen them be before. It was nerve-racking.

“Chara-san…I know what people say about me. It’s true…I…often flirt to get out of awkward situations…” Frisk stroke one of their cheeks in an attempt to hide their embarrassment. “I wish I could be more like you, Chara-san.”

“Senpai!?” Chara said, their voice squeaking of embarrassment.

Frisk smiled. “You always seem so confident, Chara-san. You treat everyone with the same indifference, as though you don’t have to put up an act to deal with anyone. It doesn’t make you popular, but at least it makes you real. More real than I can ever be.”

Frisk lowered their gaze. “I act differently with every person. I act the way I think they want me to act. I use to think I did it to spare them any social anxiety they might have felt around me, but lately I realized I did it for me. I wanted them to like me. I needed them to like me. I couldn’t stand the thought of being alone.”

Chara was caught off guard as the watched Frisk wiped a lone tear from their eye. Frisk smiled up at Chara. “I tried doing that with you too, you know? I tried everything I could think of. I tried complimenting you. I tried taunting you. I even tried flirting with you! But nothing I did worked! Then I realized, it wasn’t working because you were being yourself with me, while I was being a chara-ature of myself around you.”

Frisk gave a sympathetic smile as Chara groaned loudly. “Sorry, spending years with Sans does things to your pun instincts. It’s a force of habit at this point.” Their serious demeanor returned. “But it doesn’t make it any less true. I want to be me around you Chara-san, if you let me.”

“Sen…pai…” Chara managed, their face a deep red. They looked deeply in each other’s eyes letting everything sink in. They both knew what would come next. Chara closed their eyes in anticipation as Frisk pulled them in close.

And then they smooched!

Kiss!

Kiss Kiss!!!

“Alphys?”

Alphys yelped and spun around from her notepad to see two children in her lab: one that looked disinterested and the other that looked apologetic.

“Frisk! Chara! What are you two doing here!?” Alphys said as she laughed nervously.

Frisk gave her a patient smile. “…You asked us to come. Remember? To make sure Chara’s temporary body was functioning properly?”

“Oh. Oh! Yes! Of course!” Alphys said as she started to sweat a little.

Chara raised an eyebrow. “What could the good doctor be writing down so frantically that she forgot we were coming over?” They asked.

“Just…some…notes!” Alphys said babbling. “About how you two are functioning as two separate entities!”

She observed that she could have phrased that last part better as Chara narrowed their eyes. “May we read these observations?”

Alphys quickly hid notebook in her desk’s file storage compartment and locked it. “Look at the time! We have to start the tests, NOW!” Alphys shouted as she rushed the two kids into the next room.

She really hoped that she didn’t die today.

Here’s that fluffy ending I told you about, inspired by the anime post you made about Chara’s expectations vs. reality. I modified it to be more of a fanfic shipping by Alphys! I figure this takes place the following day, when the news spreads like wildfire!
